We oppose war as an instrument of foreign policy and believe in the immediate but responsible withdrawal of all U.S. forces from Iraq AND Afghanistan.

We believe in holding our leaders accountable to the American people and to Congress through all necessary means, including the impeachment process, when constitutionally justified.

We believe in a fair and just immigration policy that opens a path to legal status for those working in and contributing to the American society.

We oppose the further development and/or use of all nuclear weapons.

We believe in treating illegal drug use as a public health issue.

We oppose capital punishment and believe that the right to life is fundamental and cannot be taken from any man or woman by law, by edict or by the particular will or convenience of any court or legislature to right any wrong.

We believe in the right for all women to make decisions about their reproductive health.

We believe in the rights of the people to access to the commons, such as natural resources, public airwaves, and the technology of the internet, free from interference by corporate agendas.

We believe in guaranteed, high quality, public education for all from Pre-K through four years of college.

We believe in single-payer, not-for-profit, universal health care.

We believe in limiting political campaigns and elections to public control and financing.

We believe in public control and financing of social security.

We believe in equality under the law for all minorities and same sex couples.

We believe in repealing or improving NAFTA to require the enforcement of human and environmental rights, working conditions and pay scales for workers in all countries.

We believe in the pursuit of stem cell research.

We support research and investment in renewable energy which effectively uses natural resources such as sunlight, wind, rain, tides and geothermal heat, and which may be naturally replenished. Renewable energy technologies range from solar power, wind power, hydroelectricity/micro hydro, biomass and biofuels for transportation.

we believe in a sustainable future for our planet, our nation and our community, of holding a policy of respect for nature and maintaining an ecological balance between the interests of man and nature.

We believe in the Precautionary Principle. We believe that products and services must be shown to be sufficiently safe for the general public before any person or corporation can market them. Sufficient testing and time to ensure product or service safety must be required.

We support the Charter of the United Nations and its "Universal Declaration of the Rights of Man."

We believe that nature has rights. The fundamental human rights on which human survival depends are nature’s rights, and it is time we safeguarded them.

More specifically, we believe in the following:

An immediate end to the U.S. occupation of Iraq and Afghanistan.

We oppose Israel's illegal occupation of Palestine and the genocidal policy known as NAKBA toward Palestinians of slaughter and forced removal from their homeland. We call for the release of all Palestinian prisoners, the bringing down of the apartheid wall, the dismantling of the colonial settlements in Palestine, the end of the Israeli occupation and the complete withdrawal to the 1967 borders in exchange for a full peace, not only with the Palestinians but also with the entire Arab world.

We support a boycott of all products made in Israel. We support an end to all American aid and funding to Israel for any purpose other than humanitarian until the occupation is ended and a resolution to this crisis occurs.

A repeal of the Patriot Act.

An end to torture, rendition and the maintenance of prisons or other similar facilities outside U.S. borders by the U.S. military, the CIA or any other agency of the U.S. government, including foreign governments acting in our behalf, that deny individuals fair and just constitutional protections under U.S. law or the Geneva Conventions.

A repeal of the Military Commissions Act which suspends rights to a speedy trial, rules out the use of the Geneva Conventions as a source of rights, denies the right of habeas corpus, and contains other provisions which violate the U.S. Constitution and international human rights standards.

We oppose the unitary executive doctrine which advocates almost unlimited executive power through the use of signing statements by the President, and believe it to be a violation of the principle of separation of powers through three branches of government.

We support the impeachment and/or prosecution of any member, or past member, of the current administration or Congress who knowingly lied to the American people about the threat of Saddam Hussein and the country of Iraq in order to provide reasons to attack that country.

We support not-for-profit universal health care for all citizens.

We favor publicly-supported education through a four-year college.

We support an aggressive national policy on global warming.

We favor public financing of campaigns and public control of all media used to present the views of candidates for public office via debates or advertisements through the designation of a public television channel exclusively for this purpose. We also support in principle the Fairness Doctrine and favor legislation that would replace the FCC doctrine with law, which would also meet Supreme Court concerns about the need to enhance public debate.

We believe that a woman’s right-to-choose must be protected as essential to personal privacy and gender equality. We also believe that only those who agree to uphold Roe v. Wade should be nominated for the Supreme Court.

We strongly favor an end to capital punishment and an end to the proposition that an “eye for an eye” is just punishment.

We support complete equality for lesbians and gays throughout society, including in marriage.

We oppose all automatic deportation of people crossing the border illegally from Mexico, and favor processing them as refugees of a failed economic system through a series of steps that legitimize their residence in the U.S.

We should end the appeal of outsourcing by revisiting NAFTA and WTO and requiring all companies importing goods to the U.S. to pay wages comparable to living standards in our country and to support international environmental standards.

We should outlaw oil commodities speculation which is artificially driving up the price of oil.

End oil dependence through investment in renewable energy resources.

We support the fundamental ideals established in the U.S. Constitution and the Bill of Rights which have made equal opportunity, social justice and government accountability the foundation of a democracy.

  • Vitter: ‘I Don’t Think We Have To Quote Unquote Pay For’ Tax Cuts For The Rich

Sen. David Vitter (R-LA) postures as a deficit hawk, attacking efforts to inject recovery spending into the economy because he fears “borrowing another dime from China.” In reality, Vitter is really a deficit peacock who is currently fighting vigorously to extend the Bush-era tax cuts for the richest two percent of Americans, a $678 billion dollar give away and one of the largest structural causes of the deficit.

Explaining his support for tax cuts for the rich on Wednesday, Vitter told a crowd at the Crowley city Chamber of Commerce that “virtually everybody” in the audience would be characterized as wealthy. As TPM notes, although the top tax cut set to expire applies to people earning over $250,000 a year, “the average household income in Louisiana was $43,635 in 2008.”

Earlier this week, Vitter doubled down on his deficit hypocrisy and told WorldNetDaily radio that paying for the Bush tax cuts for the rich would be a “recipe for disaster.” He added, “I don’t think we have to quote unquote pay for” the tax cuts:

VITTER: We aren’t talking about any additional cuts, we’re talking about keeping the present tax cuts in place. If we have to pay for keeping the present tax cuts in place, every year, every other year, that’s a recipe for disaster. That’s a recipe for significant tax increases, so I don’t think we have to quote unquote pay for that because it’s about Americans keeping their own money and our simply keeping the present tax rates in place.

    Listen here:

Allowing the Bush tax cuts for the rich to expire would simply restore Clinton-era rates and help pay down the deficit — a move supported by even former Bush administration officials. For some reason, Vitter sees no problem borrowing more money from China to finance giveaways to the wealthy.

  • Obama Slams GOP For ‘Playing Games’ With His Nominees

During a White House press conference this morning, President Obama responded to a question about whether he believes Elizabeth Warren could survive a Senate confirmation process. Warren has been rumored to be Obama’s leading nominee to head the Consumer Finance Protection Agency. In responding to the prospects of a Senate confirmation fight, Obama slammed the GOP for “playing games” with his nominees:

QUESTION: Are you unofficially concerned about a Senate confirmation?

OBAMA: [...] I am concerned about all Senate nominations these days.

QUESTION: But with respect to Elizabeth Warren, are you –

OBAMA: Hans, I wasn’t trying to be funny. I am concerned about all Senate nominations these days. I’ve got people who have been waiting for six months to get confirmed who nobody has an official objection to and who were voted out of committee unanimously, and I can’t get a vote on them.

We’ve got judges who are pending. We’ve got people who are waiting to help us on critical issues like homeland security. And it’s very hard when you’ve got a determined minority in the Senate that insists on a 60-vote filibuster on every single person that we’re trying to confirm, even if after we break the filibuster, it turns out that they get 90 votes. They’re just playing games. And as I think Senator Voinovich said very well, it’s time to stop playing games.

    Watch it:

The President is right. Since he took office, Republicans have abused a Senate rule which prevents the Senate from confirming more than a tiny fraction of Obama’s nominees unless its members unanimously consent to allowing the nomination to move forward.  Specifically, even the majority breaks a filibuster, the minority can force up to 30 hours of additional debate on the nominee before a final vote can be held. Thirty hours may not seem like a lot, but when you multiply it across the hundreds of judges, ambassadors and other officials that require Senate confirmation, there is literally not enough time to confirm more than a fraction of these nominees.  In other words, the Republicans are engaged in unprecedented use of this obscure loophole to hollow out the government and the federal bench — leaving the nation without essential judges, financial regulators and even national security officials in the process.

  • Majority Of Americans Support Letting Tax Cuts For The Wealthy Expire

Despite the fact that Republicans in Congress have made reducing the deficit one if their signature issues this election season, they also have been arguing — without addressing the $700 billion cost — that the Bush tax cuts for the wealthy should not be allowed to expire. Yet a new USA Today/Gallup poll found that a majority of Americans see it differently. “While 37% support keeping the tax cuts for all Americans, 44% want them extended only for those making less than $250,000 and 15% think they should expire for all taxpayers”:

    wdsu3hwahukzxi-aabfdga

Gallup notes the bottom line: “Democrats may not be putting themselves at great political risk by allowing the tax cuts to expire for wealthy Americans. In fact, the middle ground of extending tax cuts for low- and middle-income Americans but allowing them to expire for wealthy Americans — the Democrats’ most likely proposal — is the specific option the public prefers most.”

"We have to be willing to tell the hard truth about the power we have to corrupt the most pure, most sublime recognition of truth.

You can't finally tell the truth through the mind, because the mental process is busy with damage control. But there are a few questions you can ask to support truth telling, and you can deeply examine and ruthlessly, often painfully, answer them.

The questions are, 'What is my life standing for?' What has it stood for?' 'What is the deepest call for my life to stand for?' All you have to do is be really willing to look very carefully and see." - Gangaji
