Laura Flanders: Joe Sacco: Images Can Transport You
In Footnotes in Gaza: A Graphic Novel, Joe Sacco looks back at 1956 in Gaza, when one bloody day in Rafah left 111 Palestinians dead. He tells the story in intricate pictures as well as the words of the people who survived that day, and like his other graphic works, he combines journalism with cartooning to create a hybrid art form that not only relates a story, but transports the reader back there.
Sacco joined Laura in studio recently to discuss his work, and why he chooses the medium he does to tell these riveting stories.

"You can't be neutral on a moving train," Howard Zinn famously said. He didn't believe in staying closeted in the academy, though he was a brilliant historian whose book, A People's History of the United States: 1492 to Present changed the way many people view history. Recently, a documentary based on his work, The People Speak, brought to life the many Americans whose lives and activism would otherwise have been forgotten. Zinn died on January 27th at age 87. He lived a long, full life and was an inspiration to all of us at GRITtv. He spoke to Laura in 2008. We wrote at the time: With the financial crisis and the election |

The housing crisis was where the economic meltdown started: a bubble popped, and foreclosures spread across the country. Now houses stand vacant while people sleep on the streets in record cold, and in some places public housing is actually destroyed to make way for new development. Cities around the country spend money on housing but the crisis doesn't go away. Is it time for federal involvement? What's the solution? We talk to Catherine Albisa of the National Economic and Social Rights Initiative, author of Bringing Human Rights Home. Three Volumes Complete, Rob Robinson of Picture the Homeless and the Right to the City Alliance, and David Muchnick of Housing First! and author of Family relocation in urban renewal about public housing, empty homes and homeless people, and what "social housing" would look like. |

Blackwater's Secret War In Pakistan |

At a covert forward operating base run by the US Joint Special Operations Command (JSOC) in the Pakistani port city of Karachi, members of an elite division of Blackwater are at the center of a secret program in which they plan targeted assassinations of suspected Taliban and Al Qaeda operatives, "snatch and grabs" of high-value targets and other sensitive action inside and outside Pakistan, an investigation by The Nation has found. The Blackwater operatives also assist in gathering intelligence and help run a secret US military drone bombing campaign that runs parallel to the well-documented CIA predator strikes, according to a well-placed source within the US military intelligence apparatus.
So begins independent journalist Jeremy Scahill's latest bombshell story on the private security contractor formerly known as Blackwater. Published Monday at TheNation.com, the story details Blackwater's covert activities, which are unaccountable to Congress in way that even CIA activities are not. Scahill, the author of Blackwater: The Rise of the World's Most Powerful Mercenary Army, has reported on Blackwater for years. He joined Laura in the GRITtv studio to talk about this latest development in the story of the company that seems to pop back up in conflict zones over and over again.
